Benefits of Training: Shin Moo Hapkido Jung Shin Kwan provides both short-term and long-term physical and psycho-social benefits. The philosophy of Jung Shin Kwanl is based on the importance of human health. From the Sin Moo perspective, health has three realms: the physical, the mental, and the spiritual. Jung Shin Kwan helps students increase their happiness through the achievement of balance in all three domains of life. Physical training begins with Hapkido and at the higher level surpasses physical limitations through Sin Moo. Jung Shin Kwan is not just self defense, it is a way of life.

Our training focuses on internal and external development. Through our method of training you will increase strength and flexibility both of mind and body. You will achieve a level of physical fitness and personal growth that you did not thought possible. You will develop greater self-discipline and gain self-confidence that will carry forward into every aspect of your daily life. Through training you will increase your self-awareness which will help you avoid conflict situations by developing the skills to deescalate a potentially volatile situation. Training with us will give you the self assurance to simply walk away from a situation, which could become potentially harmful to you or to others.

Internal Development: Hapkido incorporate meditation and relaxation training, learning how to focus and release energy, moving in tandem with a partner as well as striving to excel alone, and achieving mind-body unity(Ripley, 2003). The physical exercise and mastery is, really, the means to a non-physical end. Whether one calls this state of mind enlightenment (Back & Kim, 1981), self-knowledge (Wiley, 1995), or achieving balance (Wiley, 1995), what the practice of martial arts ultimately works toward is a healthy mind, a healthy spirit, and a healthy body (Reid & Croucher, 1995).

The psychological, meditative, and philosophical aspects of our program are geared toward the enhancement of practitioners overall mental health. Through Sin Moo practitioner learns to manage and control stress through breathing and meditation. Breathing exercises help strengthen internal organs which in turn cause and increase in physical and mental energy. The meditative and philosophical practices of Sin Moo positively impact negative behaviors often presented by unruly teens or young adults. Sin Moo’s internal development practices also help individuals work through anxieties, self-esteem, self perception, and self-acceptance difficulties.

Hapkido training has a direct bearing on morality (Becker, 1982, 19), the Eastern philosophies that permeated Hapkido practices encouraged “formation of good moral character” and “non-violent attitudes and behaviors” (Bäck and Kim, 1978, 24). Research on the personalities and lives of Hapkido practitioners focused on their self-esteem and self-image levels, suggested that hapkidoist tend to be psychologically healthy and well-adjusted individuals (Konzak & Klavora, 1980).

Additionally training helps increase concentration and decrease impulsivity as well as hyperactivity issues., By emphasizing discipline, aspiration, commitment, goal setting and assertive communication, Sin Moo training enhances the practitioner’s leadership skills. Sin Moo helps practitioners develop a stronger sense goal pursue and completion. Internal training also improves the practitioner’s verbal conflict resolution skills by teaching the three stages of Hapkido defense; perception, evaluation, and decision/reaction.

External Development: Hapkido practitioners routinely report improved physical well-being and improved self-confidence, as well as many other psychological benefits attributable to training (Boudreau, 1995). As they work, with their body, to master specific techniques, hapkidoist “works on personal character and attitude” (Cerny, 1981, 47). Hapkido fosters in both the adult and teenage practitioner “motivation, discipline, and resultant change” (Brownridge, 1975, 56). In a society suffering from an epidemic of physical inactivity and extreme obesity, So Won Sool promotes an individual’s physical fitness with an emphasis on mind-body training. Our training provides an enjoyable alternative to “traditional exercise” and offers unique opportunities to learn self-defense and martial skills.

Physical training provides important health benefits and reduces morbidity and mortality. While young people commonly practice martial arts, the benefits of So Won Sool are not confined to the young. Participants of all ages demonstrate significant improvements on their aerobic capacity, balance, strength, body fat percentages drop down, and flexibility. Our approach to training helps improve pre-motor, visual spatial and motor reaction time. Through So Won Sool practitioners learn to handle any kind of aggression (from the stand up aggression to the ground and pound). So Won Sool teaches; kicking, striking; trapping; takedown and grappling skills as well as blunt and blade weapons use. So Won Sool training not only helps strengthen the body but teaches how to relax it and calm it in order to further enhance the mind and body connection.
